Steps to Adoption

The Adoption Process

The first step in adoption is to gather information about the adoption process by attending an adoption information meeting or to schedule an appointment with an agency staff member to discuss adoption options.
Second is to complete the adoption application and begin the home study process.
The home study consists of four meetings with the agency social worker to learn about your family and your desire to adopt a child. Throughout these meetings, the family is educated about parenting an adopted child and the challenges and joys of the process. A home study is required by each state and by the US Dept. of Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS).
The family submits an I-600A or I-800A application (depending on the country of adoption) to USCIS for approval to adopt an orphan.
The family receives an invitation for fingerprints from USCIS. Everyone 18 years of age or older in the household must be fingerprinted.
The family receives approval form 1-171-H from USCIS. This approval is good for 15 months.
Agency prepares family’s dossier for adoption. A dossier consists of various identifying documents, pictures of the family and friends, any medical information and the homestudy
Once the Dossier is approved, the Family waiting period for a referral begins.
Referral day arrives and the family begins to get oriented for travel.
Travel Day, this process varies.
Post Adoption Services is the last phase. Our agency stays in contact with the new adoptive family for guidance, resources that may be needed, educational support, and Post Adoption Reports, as required by the country and state.
