About the Country

China has one of the oldest continuous civilizations. Located in Eastern Asia, it is the fourth largest country in the world and has at least 14 countries and 4 seas bordering it. China is the world’s largest populated country with over 1.3 billion people inhabiting it. The country is formerly known as the People’s Republic of China and is a socialist republic, ruled by the Communist Party of China under a single-party system. The climate varies depending on the area you are in and ranges from mountains to tropical beaches. The government enforces a one-child rule with flexibility in rural areas claiming that it will maintain this law until 2020. Some areas unofficially allow 2 children as long as the second child is a girl.
Who can Adopt?

China will accept dossiers from couples only. Singles no longer qualify. Applicants must be at least 30 years old. Prospective parents should be in good physical health and mental health, have adequate resources to care for a child, have no significant criminal history, and have a body-mass index of under 40. Additional requirements and restrictions apply. Please contact us prior to application to discuss your individual eligibility.
Who are the Children?

According to the most recent INS Immigration Statistics (2008)- Of the 3,852 children adopted to the US from China, 79% were females, 21% male. 952 of the children were under one year of age, 2,533 were between one and four years old and 394 were over the age of five. The Children available from China are mostly girls, although, boys and older children, and children with medical needs are available by request. The China Center of Adoption Affairs provides the referral information with photographs and a medical profile about the child, including a brief social history and a developmental profile. Since in most cases the children have been abandoned, medical history is limited to orphanage records. Information about birth parents is not available. At this time the children that are available through the CCAA Waiting Children’s Program have a range of correctable medical conditions.
The Process

An adoption from China typically takes from 24-36 months. CCAA will expedite adoptions for applicants who were born in China. Once your dossier is completed, it is sent to CAWLI’s staff in China, where it will be translated and taken to the China Center of Adoption Affairs (CCAA) in Beijing, where it will be registered and processed. The referral of a child will be received approximately 6-36 months after receipt of your dossier. This is subject to change, according to the current processing times at CCAA. Upon acceptance of the referral, your travel follows usually within 2-4 months.
