Frequently Asked Questions

Who is allowed to Adopt?

Most countries involved in inter-country adoption prefer to place children with married couples. While countries, including China and the Ukraine do not allow single persons to adopt, the vast majority allow single women, and a very few will approve child placement with single men.  To get approval from the US Immigration Services (USCIS), you must be a minimum of 25 years old. Each country also has their own age limitations.

What is the average cost for Inter-country Adoption?

The average cost is between $20,000.00 and $35,000.00 depending on the country you choose. Some countries require more than one trip, so the costs are impacted by the cost of airfare.

Is there financial help available to adopting families?

Yes, there are a number of grants and low interest loans available. For a partial list of these, please see our links to financial help.

What is the adoption process? Where do I start?

The first step is to complete a homestudy, and gather all necessary documents required for the homestudy process. Our licensed social workers will walk you through this process. Some of the documents required are: Marriage/Birth certificates, CORI, Child Abuse Clearances, Bank Statements, Letters of Reference and medical exams.

Once your homestudy is approved, the Good Hope Staff will take you through the Immigration Application Filing and Dossier paperwork process. When your Adoption Dossier is approved in your country of choice, our staff will ready you for travel, and prepare you to meet your child. After Court and a Visa interview in the chosen country, you will bring your child home.

What is the length of time for an International adoption?

The time varies between 12 and 26 months. There are times when adoptions work quickly and may complete in less than one year. International Adoption circumstances often change frequently, impacted by the political climate, numbers of available children, and the number of families ahead of you, to name a few influencing factors.
